Speaking out for Welsh Wildlife

Wild Cymru was founded in 2018 as a charitable incorporated organisation (charity number: 1180113). Our vision is of ‘a Wales with more wildlife in more places, created by a society that intrinsically values the natural world’.

Our Mission

More wildlife. More places. A stronger voice for nature.

Wild Cymru is an independent conservation charity working for a Wales with more wildlife in more places.

Since 2018, we have grown from a small organisation into a charity delivering practical conservation, species recovery, environmental investigations, legal challenges and independent nature journalism through Natur Cymru.

Our priorities

We are focussed on five key areas:

Better land management

• Demonstrating and promoting best practice for wildlife.

Species recovery

• Delivering practical action to help threatened species recover.

Natur Cymru

• Growing the reach and impact of Wales’ independent nature magazine.

Nature Investigations

• We have created a first-of-its-kind investigative unit for nature in Wales, bringing together world-class journalistic and wildlife filmmaking experience to investigate and expose threats to our natural environment.

The next generation

• Supporting early-career conservationists and developing future talent.

Alongside this, we will strengthen the organisation itself by growing our supporter and donor base, diversifying our income, building our reserves, strengthening our governance and increasing our public profile.

Building on our independence

We are proud to be an independent charity that does not accept government funding. This gives us the freedom to speak out, challenge decisions and put the needs of wildlife first.

We are a small organisation, but our track record shows that we can deliver significant change. Over the next five years, we want to build on that foundation — reaching more people, delivering more for nature and becoming an even stronger voice for Wales’ wildlife.

Wild Cymru was formed in response to the growing need for a truly independent nature conservation organisation for Wales. An organisation that was able to speak out and challenge environmental decision makers, Government and statutory bodies to do more for Welsh wildlife. To help achieve this we undertake a wide variety of nature conservation activities, including:

●  Targeted species and habitat conservation projects
●  Research, surveys and monitoring
●  Practical habitat management and landowner advisory
●  Community engagement and education
●  Advocacy and campaigns

To remain uncompromised and objective we do not seek or accept direct funding from Welsh Government or its statutory environmental body. Instead, Wild Cymru relies on the generosity of individual supporters, grant giving trusts and foundations.
